Project SUPA NOVA, our 70 Nova

The car had gone through some modification before we got my hands on it. We bought it of a guy near Crossfield. Here are some of the pictures the previous owner supplied me with. Nice Scoop Eh.

When we finally saw the car out on his farm, he had painted it a kinda purple color. Not a great paint job, very dull. But the cars integrity seemed good. It was about 20 below 0 when I saw it.

The Floors and trunk pans were in pretty good shape, the interior had been semi painted black. All the parts seem to be there other than the drive train. There were new rear quarters on the car, but installed with overlap joints riveted together. The outside looked good , but when you opened the trunk it was nasty. We thought what the heck, we gave the guy some money and towed it back to Calgary.

The Nova sat in my backyard for about a year and then we decided to go at it. We pushed it into the alley and then up into the Garage.

Then the tools came out and me, my Boys along with our good friend Rod started tearing it down.

Here is the inside of it when we got it and after we de assembled it. The Floor pan is in pretty good shape.

Well we decided to start taking the Left rear Quarter off. First you can see that they were put on with overlap joints as well they were only riveted on. Ouch You must also see how they were attached at the bottom. This is how not to attach a $300.00 1/4 Panel.

With a drill and a grinder we removed bondo and rivets. Finally the 1/4 was off

Only to find the car had been in a side impact accident at sometime in it's life. The B pillar had been replaced in much the same fashion as the quarter was replaced. Overlap seams with some brazing for welds. A healthy load of Bondo as well I might add. Note I took what I thought was a rocker off only to find the original beat up one underneath it. NASTY !

When then proceeded to start cutting out all the bad repair job and trying to straighten it out so new panels would fit on properly. We also cut open the top of the quarter panel and removed the overlap piece and welded it back up.

Not much left but a good place to start.

So we decided to put new outer wheel wells in the back. Not a pleasant job. The old one came out in a few pieces.

We also managed to score a 350 out of a 71 Nova, it will need a rebuild but we got it complete.

Well the new outer wheel wells are not fitting very good. WE put them down for awhile and concentrated on cleaning and sandblasting parts. We also managed to make a major score, a front clip that is near perfect. Rod, Mitch and I went and saw it, and bought it on the spot. Here it is.

We got it home and absolutely had to see it on the car. So of course we had a test fit. Check it out.

I decided to try and do some work in the trunk as the rear quarter is consuming our time. At this point we have about 100 man hours ( I'm asking myself the same thing,100 hours ? )in to the left rear quarter. So much time spent cleaning up someone else's mess. O well here's some trunk patch panel work. Take note of some patch work in the trunk floor from the previous owner. Is that masking tape covering the hole and then some bondo on top.

Here is the Left rear trunk drop down panel that connects the quarter to the car. We also lost some of the inner wheel well on this part to. Some fabrication in order for that.

While under the car we noticed yet another little problem on the left rear side. Nothing much really just a kink in the unibody frame that is making the left side about 1/4 inch shorter than the right and is pushing the trunk pan up. Out comes the porta power, time to do some frame straightening.

We had to get the rocker fitted on before going any further with the quarter. Lots of cutting and grinding here as well.

The continuing Left Quarter saga. We have been in the garage now for a LOT of hours. Panel off, panel on, panel off, panel on. You get the picture.

Well we are happy with the way it is fitting. Time to bite the bullet and start cutting the car so it can be butt welded in. YIKES !

Then to finish the door jam

Momma mea we finally found the Muncie, had a Hurst shifter as well.

Sorry we took a break for a while. Got to have some fun time as well.

We got back to it, stripped the car back down so we could sandblast the frame and the firewall

The Drivers side is almost done and is in an Epoxy primer now.

Some more shots of the entire drivers side and the Trunk that we completely stripped and Primed

We also started to paint the rad support and sub frame with an epoxy paint

We also found some corvette style rally wheels, Yahoo. thanks to a 77 corvette doner.

Not sure what the guy was thinking with the rubber. But it will soon come off.

Well we decided to spin the Car around and start cutting the other side a part.

Far bit more rust on this side. So start cutting we go, and some fabricating.

We then put the new wheel well in, after tons of off and on trying to fit it with the new quarter panel. Very lonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng process.

With that out of the way we test fit the quarter a few hundred more times to get it to line up properly so the car could be cut to fit.

Did some more and then some more wleding on the quarter, it is starting to take shape now. Also started to tackle the Door on this side. Check out the Bondo in the door. Oh and the bushings in the door look new, cause I put them there.

Took a Saturday off and went up to Reddeer for the Spring swap meet. Got a few things but the big ticket was another set of Rallys, this time 7 inch. 7s on the front 8s on the back, oh ya.

Have not updated for a while but here is were we are at. We bought another car for parts. Basically for the rear end and some dash parts for our 70. The front clip was beautiful so we took that off as well. It was a 4 door so the rest went to the Crusher.

Well then we got another 73 hatchback 2 door. Mitch wanted one so we bought it. It came in parts. the upside is it came with new quarters and wheel wells not yet put in. it also came with an extra engine "383 Stroker" that needs to be redone.

Ok so in the mean time a lot took place on our 70 project.

We then completely finished stripping the whole car of it's 10,000 coats of paint, and primed the whole thing. No pics though, whoops.

Then we finally decided on a paint 2007 Gm Victory Red. Very nice color. We shot all the underside of hood, trunk, etc and all the jambs.

We completely finished inside the trunk as well. Sprayed with GM speckle paint. Looks great. Pics to follow.

We finally picked up that Stroker that came with the 73 Hatchback we bought. They said they over heated the engine ? So we pulled it down to see what was up with it. Bearings were a mess, some sludge in the pan. Has over sized pistons in it.
