STATEMENT FOR WORK IN GALLERY 1 - 1990 to 1992

When I embarked on this body of work, the original source of inspiration came from nature (ie. landscapes).  However, at the time, I was feeling a lot of angst.  I had just recently graduated from University with a degree in Fine Arts and not sure of career plans; my mother was striken with cancer; I had a bad romantic relationship; the Gulf War had just ended; and the world seemed to be in turmoil.  The images in this gallery are very raw and expressive.  The symbols contained in the compositions have been deliberatly designed to get an immediate emotional response from the viewer (which was described as unsettling by many who attended the initial exhibition of the work).

Ever since high-school I had been fascinated by the surrealist and expressionist art movements and this interest was carried into this body of work.  I was also inspired by the work of the art professors I studied under at University, who were creating work that had deep emotional appeal to me.

Unfortunately, my attempt to express my feelings through my work, at the time, was not successful.  Most of the compositions in the series are technically over-worked and the content is blatantly "shock value".

Age and wisdom has now calmed the desire to express such raw emotions.  Nonetheless, I believe it is important to provide this gallery of art work to you in effort to chronicle my development as an artist.

"It is only by listening to the heart that one can speak of Art without belittling it."
Elie Faure - from "Histoire d' Art", 1992.
